1 Be able to investigate practice in own area of specialism
1.1 Analyse the application of pedagogical principles in own area of specialism
When teaching Hair and beauty the pedagogical principal can be applied by ensuring I have subject specialist knowledge and use different teaching strategies and resources. Specialist knowledge and skills allows me to pass this onto the leaners and keep learners focussed by providing them with new learning. For example showing students a wide variety of hairstyles would always keep then engaged however showing the same style would make the leaners demotivated due to repetitive information being delivered. It is vital I am aware of different areas of specialism to teach the leaners a wide variety of services offered by the hair and beauty services. I would consider delivery of learning and requirements for this. This would include me using different types of resources (PowerPoints, individual tasks, group working, activities, games relating to the subject) and location (whether I am able to carry out the teaching and have the equipment and tolls needed for hair and beauty). You can enhance interest and understanding concepts of the learners by delivering lessons in an interesting and practical way within the framework of pedagogical principles.
The application of pedagogical principles in my own area of specialism (Hair and beauty) requires me to be competent and confident with my own abilities first. To be a competent Hair/beauty therapist it requires lots of experience, dedication and time, without dedication, you will not put in the time and in turn not gain the experience. Dedication is a fundamental element, which is expressed to all the Hair and beauty students, in order for them to succeed. Dedication goes hand in hand with motivation, motivation is developed from enjoyment. Therefore making a positive rapport between student and teacher is very important because ‘good teacher-student relationships are based on mutual respect. The student respects the teacher for their teaching skills, personal qualities, knowledge and professionalism’ (Petty, 2004) which puts emphasis on the teacher who is at the core of the motivation behind any prosperous student. The students dedication to learning will reflect all the way through their course progression, it will increase their chances of succeeding.
