CMI 8001V1 – Personal Development As A Strategic Leader

1.1. Analyse the Needs, Goals, and Aspirations of Organisations and People Involved in Inter-Organisational Strategies

Leaders are considered strategic when they have attained a high degree of operational experience and qualifications, which, include leadership and management development. These strategic skills are developed in both occupational and commercial environments. Strategic leaders are those who can protect the organisation and prepare it for constant change, thus, supporting the organisation in dealing with the uncertain that accompany an ever-changing marketplace. Leaders are responsible for setting and maintaining an organisation’s strategic direction throughout their tenure and beyond. Leaders are also mandated to develop a future vision and use their position to align, inspire, and motivate the organisation’s leadership teams [Kotter, 2001, p. 81]. A strategic leader also makes exceptional decisions that guide the organisation through any change management implementation.

Personal development [PD] is a concept that covers a broader field than simple self-help and development. PD may incorporate developing other people in the workplace, perhaps as a coach and mentor; hence, competence must include the ability to realise the potential of the leadership team, by providing professional training, assessment, leadership development, coaching and mentoring.

Strategic growth in an organisation is seen as a process that determines the direction an organisation will follow as far as three to five years ahead. To understand the strategic direction in which an organisation is heading, the organisation needs to have a precise knowledge of its current position. This will help the organisation to determine the right strategic direction and develop a comprehensive plan of how to reach its destination. This may be formalised with subsequent documentation as a strategic plan. A strategic plan is an instrumental tool for the strategic direction and navigation of the organisation, and it should predict the development of the current marketplace. When an organisation plans and organises its business strategy, strategic innovations, and alterations to the strategic plan, the leadership team must convene to discuss ideas and be a cornerstone for the organisation’s survival in an unstable business environment. Strategic growth must be considered in the formulation and implementation stages by any strategic leader; thus, it is vital to identify and appreciate the leadership skills, tactical abilities, required of a strategic leader.
